Jazz Improvisation as a Model for Creative Organizations is a unique and engaging training experience designed to help organizational leaders and teams enhance collaboration, innovation, and adaptability. This workshop draws on the dynamic and flexible nature of jazz improvisation, demonstrating how the principles that guide jazz musicians—such as active listening, creative risk-taking, and real-time problem-solving—can be applied to organizational teamwork and leadership.
The core of the workshop is a live demonstration with a jazz band, where participants will observe and engage with the band as they showcase how communication and collaboration unfold in real-time. Through interactive exercises and role-playing, participants will explore how jazz techniques like "using mistakes creatively" can foster innovation and agility within their teams.
Perfect for team outings or seminar days where the agenda shifts from formal to fun. To deepen the impact, the workshop pairs seamlessly with the Harmonized Teamwork course led by Susanna Aleksandra Veldi. After observing the principles of teamwork through jazz, participants join in with vocal improvisation, getting hands-on experience with collaboration and creativity.
The band can also stay on afterwards to provide live music for continued enjoyment.

Jari Perkiömäki is an award-winning jazz saxophonist, composer, and seasoned educator with a long and distinguished career in both music and leadership. A former Rector of the University of the Arts Helsinki, Jari holds a doctoral degree focused on improvisation and has since developed unique workshop-style training for organizations. Drawing on his extensive experience as a musician and leader, Jari’s workshops use the collaborative dynamics of a jazz band to teach innovative management and teamwork principles. His training has been sought after by major companies such as KONE and Wärtsilä, offering valuable insights into leadership, creativity, and organizational flexibility through the lens of jazzimprovisation.
Patrick Furu, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Management and Organization at the Hanken School of Economics andthe Academic Director of Hanken & SSE Executive Education. With over 20 years' experience in consulting and executive education, Patrick specializes in strategy, change management, and competence development. He has worked with major organizations such as Ericsson, Nordea, and TeliaSonera. Patrick’s research focuses on the development and transfer of strategic competencies in multinational companies, as well as managing knowledge work.
